Why Early Intervention Matters

Many orthodontic issues begin developing as early as age 6. Crowded teeth, bite misalignments, and jaw development problems can often be identified before all the adult teeth have come in. Dr. Jeremy Sim, who graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2016, is an advocate of interventional orthodontics. With a strong passion for paediatric dentistry, he believes in the importance of early intervention to effectively guide jaw development and help reduce the need for more complex treatments, such as jaw surgery, later on.

While early intervention doesn’t always mean immediate treatment, regular assessments provide a clear roadmap to monitor and address any issues promptly as a child grows.

Singapore has been slow to catch on to interventional orthodontics, often waiting till children are in fully permanent dentition before treatment. This approach often means treatment is too late, leading to complex treatments that often require jaw surgery later in life to reach an ideal outcome.

Orthodontic Appliances

Traditional orthodontic appliances, such as Twin Blocks, Palatal Expanders and Lip Bumpers have been used effectively to treat early orthodontic problems. Some of these devices are even fixed, so that children are not able to remove them by themselves. This overcomes compliances issues with removable appliances that include Invisalign First. These appliances, when used in conjunction with adjunct appliances such as face masks, are effective for patients with unideal jaw growth (commonly referred to as underbites or overbites).

Invisalign First: Designed for Growing Smiles

Invisalign First is specially designed for children who still have a mix of baby and adult teeth, also known as mixed dentition. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners that gently guide the teeth into position over time.

These aligners are comfortable, customised, and don’t interfere with eating, brushing, or day-to-day activities like sports or music. For children who are self-conscious or sensitive to changes in routine, Invisalign often provides a smoother and less disruptive experience.

Is My Child Ready for Invisalign?

Invisalign can be a great option for many children, but not all. Readiness depends on the child’s dental development, the complexity of the case, and their ability to wear the aligners consistently. Dr Carly highlights that compliance is key — aligners need to be worn 20–22 hours a day to work effectively.

With guidance from parents and regular clinic follow-ups, most kids adapt well. Using simple visual progress trackers can help younger patients stay motivated, especially when they see their own smiles improving over time.

Supporting Oral Health During Treatment

Many children and parents find that maintaining oral hygiene is easier with Invisalign compared to fixed braces. Because the aligners are removable, kids can continue brushing and flossing as usual without navigating around brackets or wires. Dr Jeremy notes, however, that proper care of the aligners is just as important. They need to be cleaned regularly to avoid plaque buildup or staining. At the start of the treatment, children and their caregivers are guided on how to care for both their teeth and trays to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Long-Term Benefits of Early Treatment

Orthodontic treatment in childhood isn’t just cosmetic — it can help correct bite alignment, support better speech and chewing function, and reduce the risk of future complications like tooth wear or gum issues. Dr Jeremy emphasises that early guidance builds strong foundations for lifelong dental health, and in many cases, can prevent the need for more complex orthodontics later in life.

Every child’s smile is unique — and so is their journey. Invisalign can be a gentle and effective option when used at the right stage, with the right support. A consultation with a paediatric dentist can help clarify what’s needed, even if treatment isn’t necessary right away.
